Metal Horseshoe Shims
Horseshoe shims are typically used around bolts and fastenings. They are suitable for spacing and aligning windows, doors, cabinets, joints and floor joists, as well as wall and insulation board shimming. They are ideal for high load and “hammer in” applications.
To save you time, simply select the material you want your horseshoe shim made from. Choose the thickness, hole size and overall size, and the price will automatically update so you can add the item straight to your basket.

We manufacture and supply a large range of metal horseshoe shims, in aluminium, stainless and mild steel. Our horseshoe shims are available in 5251 aluminium, S275JRPO steel, CR4 steel, S275JRDRY steel, 316 2B stainless steel and pre-galvanised steel from as thin as 0.9mm to as thick as 20mm.
Horseshoe shims slot around a fixing without removing it, which makes them the standard choice for door and window frames. Our guide on how to shim a door frame walks through placement, thickness and checking for square. Horseshoe Shims FAQs
What bolt sizes do your horseshoe shims fit?
Our horseshoe shims have a slot for M12, M16 or M20 bolts, in 50mm, 75mm, 100mm or 150mm square overall sizes. The slot lets the shim slide around a fixing without removing it.
What are horseshoe shims used for?
Horseshoe shims are used around bolts and fastenings to space and align windows, doors, cabinets, joints and floor joists, and for wall and insulation board shimming. They also suit high load and hammer-in applications.
What thickness of horseshoe shim do I need?
Measure the gap first, then build up in stages until the component sits level. Mild steel horseshoe shims run from 0.9mm to 20mm thick, and aluminium, pre-galvanised and 316 stainless steel from 0.9mm to 5mm. Use the fewest shims you can, as a short stack is more stable under load than a tall one.
Which horseshoe shim material should I choose?
Mild steel suits dry, indoor and structural work. Choose 316 stainless steel for external, damp or coastal locations, and pre-galvanised steel for basic corrosion protection in enclosed but potentially damp spaces. Aluminium weighs about a third of steel and avoids dissimilar metal contact when shimming aluminium frames.
